Notts County have signed forward, Daniel Kanu on a season-long loan from Charlton Athletic.
Kanu’s loan switch to County sees him step up to League One after a successful 2025-26 season at League Two’s Walsall with 18 goals in 44 appearances, during which the Saddlers reached the third round of the FA Cup where they lost 5-1 at Norwich.
The 21-year-old now will be tested at League One level with County following Charlton’s decision to accept the Magpies’ loan offer, amidst interest from other League One clubs after he was previously linked with a move to Bromley at the start of the summer transfer window.
County’s Director of Football, Richard Montague explained that the decision to sign Kanu on loan was made in the interest of complementing their current forward selection.
“Daniel’s very exciting skillset complements our other forwards nicely.
“He’s a natural finisher who thrives off running in behind, using his pace and power to his advantage, and he’s also strong out of possession – hard-working and effective in the press, which is important to how we want to play.
“We believe Daniel, who has a brilliant attitude, is a great fit for us and vice-versa – and we’re delighted he’s chosen Notts as the best place to continue his development.”
Kanu began his career at Charlton where he graduated through their youth academy to make his professional debut in February 2022 as a substitute in a 2-1 loss to Wigan in League One, in what was the first of his two appearances in the 2021-22 season,
He then went on to score his maiden senior goal in the 2022-23 season in a 3-2 loss at Plymouth Argyle in November 2022 in the EFL Trophy, as he made 14 appearances that campaign followed by seven goals in 34 appearances across the 2023-24 season.
That latter campaign also saw him spend time at National League’s Southend United with four goals in six appearances, of which his four goals came in his debut appearance in a 5-0 victory over Solihull Moors.
He then spent the 2024-25 season back at Charlton with one goal in 20 appearances as the Addicks won promotion to the Championship, albeit via the League One Play-Offs.
At international level, Kanu has scored twice in eight senior caps for Sierra Leone.
