Midfielder, Nico Gonzalez has completed a £52m transfer from Manchester City to Newcastle United.
Gonzalez’s move to St James’ Park has concluded his 18-month stint at Man City where he scored four goals in 59 appearances, and helped the Cityzens achieve a domestic cup double last season with Carabao Cup and FA Cup titles.
City however are undergoing a midfield revamp under new manager, Enzo Maresca and have sanctioned the 24-year-old’s move to Newcastle following acceptance of a £52m offer, which comprised of a £48m fixed fee plus £4m in add-ons.
Gonzalez has signed a five-year contract with Matthias Jaissle’s Magpies until June 2031 and in his first interview at the club, he spoke of his happiness at completing the move.
“I’m really happy to be here at this amazing club. I’ve only heard top words about the club and the city, so I’m really excited to live here and to be part of this project.
“I love the black and white shirt already and I can’t wait to start wearing it on the pitch for this club.
Jaissle added: “I’m very happy to see Nico become a Newcastle United player. He brings serious quality and elite experience in a key area of the pitch.
“Nico is a really strong ball carrier – somebody who can drive the team forward while staying composed under pressure. He also brings discipline defensively, he reads the game well and his physicality makes him well suited to the Premier League.
“Nico is a proven winner who has already played at some huge clubs in Europe’s top leagues, but he’s also still young and hungry to develop further. He is a fantastic addition to our squad.”

Gonzalez began his career at Barcelona where he graduated through their academy into the first team where he scored twice in 37 appearances in the 2021-22 season, but was loaned out to Valencia the following season where he only scored one goal in 26 appearances.
A move to Porto followed in July 2023 where he scored nine goals in 68 appearances and helped them win Taca Da Portugal in his first season, which was followed by Supertaca Candido de Oliveira in August 2024 before he left for City in February 2025.
At international, level, Gonzalez represented Spain at Under-17 and 21 levels but is still awaiting his first senior call-up.
