Hull City have completed the double signing of Nobel Mendy and Lucas Herrington.
Defender, Mendy has joined from Rayo Vallecano for a club-record undisclosed transfer fee on a five-year contract until June 2031 with a club option to extend for a further year, having scored twice in 28 appearances for the Spanish team who finished runner-up in last season’s UEFA Conference League.
Upon completing his move, Mendy revealed that he is “very happy” and “very proud” to make the switch but has vowed to get aggressive when needed to help his defence as he fulfils his dream of Premier League football.
“I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.
“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it’s a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.
“This season is going to be a good season, and we will all be in it together.”
Herrington meanwhile has joined from Colorado Rapids for an initial £12.6m fee plus £4.4m in add-ons on a five-year contract until June 2031, having scored one goal in 20 appearances for Rapids, and has also made six senior appearances for Australia.
The 18-year-old Australian centre-back is now “buzzing” to join Hull and play in English football.
“It’s a great project and a great club to be a part of. I’m so excited to be here.
“The opportunity to play in the Premier League, one of the best leagues in the world, is a dream come true. I’ve woken up at all hours in the morning in Australia to watch these games. To be a part of it is so special.
“To hear from the club and coaching staff has been so exciting for me. I can’t wait to meet all the boys and the fans. I’m here to work hard and hopefully get a lot of games in the Premier League.”
Herrington also revealed that he consulted ex Hull player and fellow Aussie – Jackson Irvine about the club and received high praise.
“I spoke to ‘Jacko’, and he said very good things about the club and the area. He loved his time here. To hear that from him, after being with him at the World Cup, gave me a sense of calmness.”
Herrington also reflected on his experience of playing for Australia at the World Cup and is focused on making his competitive debut at home on Saturday 22 August.
“It was a dream come true to represent my country at the World Cup – something I had always wanted to do. To achieve it at 18 was so special and to have my family in the stands meant everything to me.
“I’m really looking forward to the first game against Manchester United. I can’t wait to get started.”
