Bolton Wanderers have signed defender, Lewis Brunt from Wrexham for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Brunt’s arrival at the Toughsheet Community Stadium ended his two-year spell at Wrexham where he helped them achieve promotion from League One to Championship in his first season, before they finished seventh last season and missed out on the play-offs by just two points.
Wrexham nevertheless decided to accept an undisclosed fee from Bolton for the 25-year-old who has signed a long-term contract, and is excited to potentially make his debut at home against Preston North End on Saturday 15 August at 12:30pm BST.
“You only have to drive past the ground and you can see the size of it all. I think there’ll be 26-27,000 here this weekend, so the size of the club is massive and that’s obviously a huge pull,” said Brunt, who will bring added pace and composure to Wanderers’ back line with the versatility to play in a couple of different positions if required.
“The club’s back into the Championship and I want to try to continue playing in this league and showcase my ability. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind career so far. I was fortunate to play in the Premier League for Leicester City, had a great year at Mansfield on loan in League Two and then made the step to Wrexham in League One and we won that.”
Brunt proceeded to explain that although last season was frustrating with various injury issues and just 12 appearances, he hopes to bring his experience to Bolton as they return to the Championship after a seven-year absence.
“Last season was a little bit of a stop-start for me but hopefully I can kick on now this season. Stepping up from League One to the Championship is a big step up but if I can come into the building and try and help the lads and help the team then that’s what I’ll do.
“It’s going to be a challenge but it’s one I’m sure the group, the staff, the team are all looking forward to and hopefully we can make it a positive season.”
Brunt began his career at Aston Villa but failed to make a single senior appearance amidst loan spells at Gloucester City where he produced three goals in 13 combined appearances, before he joined Leicester in August 2021 and made four appearances.
During his three-season spell at the Foxes, he made four appearances and spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Mansfield, where he scored twice in 40 appearances.
Across his time at Wrexham, Brunt scored one goal in 41 appearances.
