Newcastle United have appointed Matthias Jaissle as Eddie Howe’s successor as Head Coach.
Howe quit Newcastle after nearly five years as he felt that he had taken the club as far as he can in terms of development and potential amidst sales of key players, which paved the way for the club to sign Jaissle from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli despite having no prior experience in English football.
Jaissle however led Al-Ahli to consecutive AFC Champions League Elite titles in the last two seasons and the 2025 Saudi Super Cup title, with the Saudi club set to receive £9.42m in compensation from the Magpies for Jaissle’s move.
Despite lengthy delays with Al-Ahli’s paperwork, the 38-year-old German has signed a four-year contract to take charge of Newcastle until June 2030, and will immediately assume training as the squad head to La Manga, Spain, for a pre-season training camp.
Upon signing, Jaissle spoke of his pride at taking charge of the Magpies who he considers to be ambitious and has iterated that unity and graft will be key to success.

Born in Nurtingen, Jaissle played for 1899 Hoffenheim between 2007-14 where he scored two goals and created one assist in 65 appearances in all competitions, and was part of the team which won promotion from 2. Bundesliga to the Bundesliga in his first season at the club.
He subsequently went on to become assistant manager at Denmark’s Brondby before he took charge of Red Bull Salzburg’s Under-18s team in summer 2019.
Jaissle then made his first step into senior management at FC Liefering in January 2021 and led them to second in Austria’s second tier, which led him to rejoin RB Salzburg but this time as first-team manager in a successful move with two Austrian Bundesliga titles and 2021-22 Austrian Cup.
RB Salzburg however sacked him in July 2023 after he notified them of Al-Hilal’s interest and negotiations just 48 hours before their season-opener, which paved the way for him to make the move to Al-Ahli.
