Belgium’s Westerlo have signed midfielder, Cameron Congreve from Swansea for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Congreve’s permanent move to the Belgian club comes after two successful seasons on loan at Bromley and Dundee respectively in the last two campaigns.
In his loan spell at Bromley, Congreve produced six goals and assists apiece in 44 appearances as the Ravens consolidated their EFL status in their maiden League Two campaign with a 11th-placed finish, whilst he scored the opening goal in their eventual third-round exit at Newcastle United in the FA Cup.
He then made a substitute appearance in Swansea’s 3-1 first-round victory at home against Crawley Town in last season’s Carabao Cup, before he was loaned to Dundee where he registered three goals and six assists in 36 appearances as the Dee finished eighth in Scottish Premiership.
Swansea manager, Vitor Matos however didn’t view Congreve as part of his long-term plans and opted to move the 22-year-old on once Westerlo made an undisclosed bid which met the Swans’ valuation, with a sell-on clause and buy-back clause included in the deal.
Congreve has signed a four-year contract at Westerlo until June 2030.
Congreve spent his youth career rising through Swansea’s academy until he broke through into the senior squad in March 2022, which saw him make his first-team debut in a 1-0 Championship loss against Blackpool before he went on to make five appearances in total by the end of the 2021-22 season.
He then made 13 appearances the following season before managerial instability in the first team saw him restricted to the Under-21s squad for the 2023-24 season, which led to him going on loan to Bromley then Dundee in the last two seasons to gain regular game time.
Congreve represents Wales at international level and broke through into the senior team in June this year, which saw him make his debut as a substitute for Dan James in a 1-1 friendly draw against Ghana, before he replaced Brennan Johnson off the bench in a 2-1 friendly loss to Romania days later.
