2026 FIFA World Cup: Quarter-Finals: Argentina v Switzerland

Argentina meet Switzerland in the last Quarter-Final tie at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Victory would see Argentina reach the semi-finals for the second consecutive edition, and a seventh time overall at a World Cup.

Switzerland have never advanced beyond this stage in a World Cup before – having lost at the Quarter-Finals stage in 1934, 38 & 54 respectively.

Team News

Argentina have no fresh injury concerns to report after their 3-2 comeback win against Egypt in the Round of 16.

Switzerland could again be without Johan Manzambi after the forward sat out their win over Colombia on penalties following a goalless draw, due to a knee injury suffered in training.

When is Kick-Off?

Argentina face Switzerland at Arrowhead Stadium, Kanas City, USA, on Saturday 11 July at 8pm CDT (2am BST, Sunday 12 July), live on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Argentina have won both of their two previous World Cup meetings against Switzerland, having beat the Swiss 2-0 in 1966 then 1-0 in 2014.
  • Switzerland are yet to beat Argentina in all competitions (D2, L5).
  • Argentina’s Lionel Messi has converted eight of his 17 shots into goals at this tournament.
  • 13 of Switzerland’s 63 shots at this tournament has been produced by Dan Ndoye.

Prediction

Having produced a tame display against Egypt which saw them ripped part defensively on the counter-attack, Argentina were lucky that a few refereeing decisions went in their favour before their quality clicked in time to snatch a late comeback which perhaps was undeserved across the 90 minutes.

Switzerland meanwhile battled their way past Colombia on penalties after they were outplayed in attacking opportunities despite their dominance in possession, so they now need another resolute defensive display and a more clinical attacking performance if want to cause a cupset.

Argentina however can’t be as bad defensively as they’ve been in their last two knockout matches so should scrape through in what could be a tough game if the Swiss can find their attacking spark.

Prediction: Argentina 2-1 Switzerland
