Brighton Sign Svoboda from Venezia

Brighton & Hove Albion have signed defender, Michael Svoboda from Venezia for an undisclosed fee.

Svoboda’s move has ended his six-season spell at Venezia where he helped them achieve promotion to Serie A on three occasions and contributed five goals in 133 appearances, despite the first two promotions subsequently having ended in immediate relegations back to Serie B.

The 27 year-old however has now made his move to Brighton for an undisclosed fee on a four-year contract until June 2030, and Head Coach – Fabian Hurzeler believes that the Austria international has the quality needed to adapt to the team well and improve the defensive side of the their play.

“He has a number of attributes that we believe will see him adapt well to how we play, both in and out of possession.

“He also adds competition to an area we are looking to strengthen and with a number of clubs pursuing him this summer, I am very happy that he’s decided to come to Brighton.”

Svoboda is currently away on international duty with Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the team set to face reigning European champions – Spain tonight at 8pm BST.

Svoboda began his career at Schwechat where he made just three appearances before he joined Stadlau then WSG Tirol for two seasons each, during which he achieved promotion from 2. Liga to Austrian Bundesliga with the latter at the end of the 2018-19 season.
