2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying: Iceland vs England

Iceland host League A3 leaders, England in a crucial 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier. 

Victory could move Iceland level on points with Spain if the latter lose to Ukraine in their mid-afternoon kick-off.

England meanwhile could begin the match sat level on points with Spain if the world champions defeat Ukraine, but victory would restore a three-point lead for Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses.

Iceland have no fresh injury concerns to report after their 1-0 victory against Ukraine.

England will be without Keira Barry after she suffered an injury in training and consequently didn’t fly out with the squad.

• Iceland are yet to beat England in FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying (D1, L2).
• England drew 2-2 in their only previous FIFA Women’s World Cup away qualifier against Iceland in September 2022 at the very same venue as this fixture, albeit at the play-off stage on that occasion.
• Iceland are looking to score in consecutive matches for the first time since October 2025 when they won 2-0 away and 3-0 at home against Northern Ireland in the Nations League Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs.

Prediction

With automatic qualification considered very unlikely unless they win this game to put themselves into contention as outsiders, Iceland know that this is a free hit for them because they’ve got nothing to lose but will need to be very clinical and defensively solid if they’re to indeed beat England.

England though could of easily beat Spain by two or three goals if had been more clinical in the accuracy of their end product, but they deserve credit for their robustly solid gameplan which frustrated Spain across the entire pitch and this is a chance to keep automatic qualification in their own hands.

Although I do expect England to win this and stay top, I do think that Iceland will give them a test if they bring the right attitude and quality to frustrate their hosts like they did in a 2-0 defeat in Nottingham last month.
