Thomas Tuchel has named a 35-man squad for England’s international friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford and James Trafford have kept their spots in goal but will face increased competition, as Newcastle’s Aaron Ramsdale has been recalled whilst Brighton’s Jason Steele is under consideration to go to the World Cup as a training goalkeeper.
Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento have both been recalled in defence alongside Harry Maguire and Fikayo Tomori, as Chelsea’s Reece James is dropped due to injury whilst his teammate – Trevoh Chalobah is also omitted from the selection.
Jude Bellingham has been absent for Real Madrid since 1 February due to a hamstring injury but has been named in the midfield section of the squad, as Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is dropped for Kobbie Mainoo, whilst Everton’s James Garner has received his first senior international call-up.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the first time since 2021 has been recalled, whilst Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer and Dominic Solanke have also been given recalls in the forward section, whilst Anthony Gordon is back in the team after he dropped out of November’s action due to injury.
Tuchel explained that not all 35 players will report en-mass with the squad split into two groups, which will see one group play against Uruguay then some of that group will be released whilst the other players will be mixed in with the second group who will play Japan.
We decided to divide it into basically two camps almost, so we bring players in that we haven’t seen who haven’t played so much to open up the picture, and the competition for plane tickets to the US.
“Then from Friday and Saturday, a group of players will come into camp – ten or eleven players who get a rest before and we will then go with a new group and mix of players into the match against Japan.”
England face Uruguay on Friday 27 March at Wembley Stadium, London, in a 7:45pm GMT kick-off, before they then meet Japan on Tuesday 31 March at the same venue in a 7:45pm BST kick-off, with both matches broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK.
