Sunderland have signed Ecuadorian winger, Nilson Angulo from Anderlecht in a £17.5 million transfer.
Angulo’s move came after Simon Adingra’s loan move to AS Monaco left Sunderland in need of a new winger, which led them to pursue him after a strong first half of the season saw him produce seven goals and eight assists in 29 appearances for Anderlecht.
The Belgian club subsequently accepted a £17.5m total bid for Angulo, which consisted of a £15m initial fee plus a further £2.5m in add-ons and the 22-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year contract on Wearside until June 2030, but won’t join his new teammates until later this week.
Sunderland’s Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman explained that Angulo is a long-term talent who he believes can bring extra quality to Sunderland’s final third.
“Nilson is an incredibly exciting prospect, and we are delighted he’s chosen to join Sunderland. A quick and creative wide player, he excels in all the core actions required to impact the final third, and he arrives ambitious to make an impression.
“He’s young but has already had many interesting experiences as a senior player domestically, on the European stage, and internationally with Ecuador.
“We are delighted to have completed this signing and look forward to welcoming Nilson to Wearside.”
Angulo began his career at Independiente del Valle before spells with the youth academies of CS Norte America and LDU Quito, of which he broke through into the senior team and scored six goals in 34 appearances after a loan spell at Atletico Kin in 2020.
During his time at LDU Quito, he helped them win the 2021 Supercopa Ecuador title.
He subsequently moved to Anderlecht in June 2022 where he has contributed 10 goals and 11 assists in 92 senior appearances across all competitions.
Angulo represents Ecuador at international level with one goal in 12 senior appearances since his debut in October 2021, with his maiden international goal having come in a 2-0 friendly win over New Zealand in October 2025 in which he opened the scoring.
