2025-26 UEFA Champions League: League Phase – Newcastle vs PSV

Newcastle face PSV in their penultimate league phase match of 2025-26 UEFA Champions League.

Victory could put Newcastle into the top eight if results elsewhere go in their favour, whilst PSV can leapfrog the Magpies in the table with a win and move into the seeded knockout play-off spots.

Team News

Newcastle have no fresh injury concerns to report following their goalless Premier League draw at Wolves.

Dan Burn (rib/lung), Jamaal Lascelles (muscle), Emil Krafth (knee), Tino Livramento (hamstring), Fabian Schar and William Osula (both ankle) remain absent.

PSV will be without Nick Olij (groin), Ruben van Bommel, Sergino Dest (both ACL), Myron Boadu, Alassane Plea (both knee) and Ricardo Pepi (arm).

When is Kick-Off?

Newcastle host PSV at St James’ Park on Wednesday 21 January at 8pm GMT, live on TNT Sports 2 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Newcastle have lost their two previous Champions League meetings against PSV (L2).
  • PSV won 2-0 in their only previous Champions League visit to Newcastle in November 1997.
  • Newcastle are yet to score a Champions League goal against PSV in two previous clashes, across which they’ve conceded three goals.
  • Four of Newcastle’s six league phase goals at home this season have been scored by Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon, who have both scored two goals apiece.
  • PSV have failed to keep a clean sheet in their three away games in this season’s league phase (W1, D2).

Prediction

Despite a lack of composure and accuracy in their end product at Wolves, Newcastle can be pleased with how dominant they were on the attack so I want to see more of the same here, but ideally with more patience and composure in their final touches and awareness of players who can pick up any overhit crosses.

PSV meanwhile stunned Liverpool at Anfield in late November but defending is their weak point with one clean sheet in their last five games in all competitions, which could suit Newcastle if the Magpies find their clinical edge but the Dutch are equally strong in attack as evidenced by their goalscoring form.

With that in mind, I expect goals at both ends and plenty of attacking fun but I do think Newcastle will have enough to nick this in front of what should be an electric home crowd.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 PSV

Result: Newcastle 3-0 PSV
