Bromley manager, Andy Woodman is proud of his squad’s “head down” attitude ahead of their League Two trip to Chesterfield.
Woodman’s Ravens currently sit top of League Two but head to seventh-placed Chesterfield this lunchtime (17 January), knowing that victory could put them 14 points clear of the Spireites who are currently part of a pack between second to eighth split by just seven points.
With promotion talk in their second EFL season easy to get carried away about, Woodman is proud of his squad’s attitude in training as he explained in his pre-match preview on YouTube that they have kept their heads down to focus on the game.
“It’s been a good week. Yeah, it’s been a really good week. The guys are in good spirits. Um, you know, nothing to really report, they’re just sort of head down, as you can see. They’re just kind of playing into each game.
“Um, there’s no big fun fair here. There’s no big noise. The guys are just pretty grounded aren’t they? And um you know they’re just you know ready for the next game that’s coming up which is Chesterfield.”
Bromley’s recent visits to Chesterfield has offered plenty of entertainment and even a red card so Woodman is envisaging more of the same, but is wary of how tough the SMH Group Stadium is to visit for away teams but believes that his team are going there in a different place to previous such trips.
“Yeah it has done in the past. Um it’s a difficult place to go as we know and their fans will always be, you know, up for the game and their staff and their players will always be up for it.
“Um, but we’re going there slightly differently than before. Um, you know, normally we’ve been the team chasing. Um, and you know, we’re going there, you know, the top of the pile a little bit now. So we’ve got a different approach hopefully and a different mindset than we’ve had in the past.
“Um and it’s going to be, you know, let’s be honest, it’s going to be a very difficult game for us and it’ll really sort of be a test of where we’re at as well, I think.
Tottenham loanee and ex Bromley youth player, Damola Ajayi could make his senior debut for the Ravens in this game, with Woodman confident that he can add extra quality to the attack.
“Yeah, I mean he’s a player that we like, a player that we’ve watched. He’s an exciting player. He’s played in the first team at Tottenham in the Europa League I think it was. Um and he’s got a real bright future. Um so he’s added a little bit of something different up at the top of the pitch.
“Um and we’re delighted that Tottenham have let him come to us on loan.”
Bromley last weekend won 2-0 away at Tranmere to record a seventh straight victory although Woodman felt that the game unfolded as he imagined in terms of its scrappy nature.
“Yeah exactly I felt it was always going to be a tough place to go. Um they’re sort of having good weeks and bad weeks at Tranmere. Um and I felt we had to go there and really sort of make a doggy sort of game. Um it was never going to be a game where it’s fluent football.
“Um and it kind of suited us probably a little bit more than them and the guys showed their metal and then it’s a quality as well you know I think we should get away from that, uh particularly the first goal the quality in that cross and finish was fantastic so good three points a difficult place to go.”
