Tottenham Hotspur have signed midfielder, Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for £35m.

Gallagher’s move back to London has brought a 17-month spell at Atletico to a close, during which he scored seven goals and created seven assists in 77 appearances across all competitions.

The 25 year-old’s arrival on a £35m transfer fee also sees him boost the number of midfield options available to manager, Thomas Frank, after Rodrigo Bentancur was ruled out for several months due to a hamstring injury which required surgery.

James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall are also sidelined indefinitely which necessitated Spurs’ decision to sign Gallagher on a five-and-a-half year contract until June 2031, with only Archie Gray, Joao Palhinha and Xavi Simons immediately available in central midfield.

Pape Matar Sarr will also be available upon his return to the club following completion of Senegal’s involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations this coming weekend, but Yves Bissouma is unlikely to be an option due to having fallen out of favour with Frank and could be sold in this month’s transfer window.

Speaking to www.tottenhamhotspur.com about his move, Gallagher spoke of his happiness to be back in London and join Tottenham.

“I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club.

“I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the Club felt the same. It was very easy, it happened very quickly and I’m ready to get on the pitch.

“I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together.”

Frank added: “Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad.

“He is still young, so has plenty of room for improvement, but also has huge experience across the Premier League, La Liga and with the England national team.

“Conor has captained teams so will bring leadership, maturity, character and personality to our dressing room, while his running power, pressing ability and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area of the pitch.

“I’m excited about working with him every day and I know the fans will love what he will bring to the team.”

Gallagher began his career at Chelsea where he scored ten goals in 95 senior appearances, although he did enjoy loan spells at Charlton, Swansea, West Brom and Crystal Palace before he established himself as a regular at Stamford Bridge.

The 25-year-old midfielder also represents England at international level with one goal in 22 senior appearances.
