Arsenal have signed Swedish right-back, Smilla Holmberg from Hammarby IF for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Holmberg’s move comes after a successful 2025 saw her feature in Sweden’s run to the UEFA Women’s Euro Quarter-Finals, where they lost on penalties to England after a dramatic 2-2 draw.
She also helped Hammarby win the Swedish Cup at the end of last season, having previously won it in 2022-23 season alongside 2023 Damallsvenskan.
Speaking to www.arsenal.com following confirmation of her transfer, the 19-year-old spoke of her joy at joining Arsenal and aims to develop her game.
“This is a very special moment for me and my family, but it’s also about joining a club with the highest standards and a strong winning culture. I’m excited to start this new chapter, to continue developing my game in a demanding environment and to compete at the highest level. My ambitions align with the club’s and I want to help win silverware here.”
Arsenal Women’s Head Coach, Renee Slegers added: “We’re thrilled to welcome Smilla to the club. She’s a very talented young defender who brings versatility and athleticism, with so much potential for development. I’m looking forward to working with her as we aim for more trophies together.”
Arsenal’s Director of Women’s Football, Clare Wheatley described Holmberg as a top young defensive talent and can’t wait to see what she achieves in North London.

Holmberg represents Sweden and has one goal in nine senior international caps following her first call-up in May 2025.
