Chelsea have sacked manager, Enzo Maresca after a slump in their form across December 2025.
Maresca arrived at Stamford Bridge in July 2024 and oversaw a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League in his first season, which culminated with the UEFA Conference League title after they beat Real Betis through four second-half goals in a 4-1 comeback victory in the final.
He then oversaw Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup title success across June-July, as they beat reigning Champions League champions, PSG in the final by a 3-0 result, through Cole Palmer’s brace and Joao Pedro’s finish before half time.
The first half of this season saw Maresca’s Blues sat just six points off the Premier League title lead in late November, yet they managed to gather just six points from six games in December, consisting of a single win, three draws and two defeats.
December however saw Chelsea defeat Cardiff to secure their passage to the semi-finals of this season’s Carabao Cup, where they will face Arsenal over two legs on 14 January and 3 February respectively.
Their last Champions League game in 2025 ended in a 2-1 defeat at Atalanta despite having led at half-time, but the loss has left them sat 13th in the league phase table with two games left and needing a top-eight finish to bypass the knockout play-offs and advance straight to the Round of 16 stage.
Two wins in their last nine matches across all competitions ultimately left Chelsea bosses with no option other than to relieve Maresca of his duties with immediate effect, ahead of their trip to Manchester City on Sunday 4 January at 5:30pm GMT.
Confirming Maresca’s exit, Chelsea issued a short club statement in which they thanked him for his contribution to the club’s recent success.
“Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company.
“During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club.
“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.
“We wish Enzo well for the future.”
