Winger, Eberechi Eze is relishing the “competition” for places within England’s squad after a 2-0 victory against Serbia in 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying.
Eze’s club teammate, Bukayo Saka opened the scoring with a 28th-minute finish, before he himself came off the bench to complete the victory with a 90th-minute strike from fellow substitute, Phil Foden’s pass on a quick counter-attack.
Eze post-match spoke to ITV about the result which ended Serbia’s World Cup qualification dreams as he selflessly admitted that he is “happy” to have scored and helped the team, which he considers to be the main priority.
“Another good performance. I’m happy to score and help the team which is important.”
The 27-year-old proceeded to praise Foden for his assist as he added: “It was. These types of players are always going to put the ball in the right position.”
Eze however faces competition from Foden, Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Jack Grealish, Morgan Gibbs-White and Morgan Rogers for the number 10 spot, with Rogers having started in that position against Serbia which excites Eze who believes that the competition benefits the team.
“There’s a lot of talent in the team. You can see the players here and the types that aren’t here as well. It’s the type of competition you want to be up against and it is going to help the team for sure.”
With qualification for next summer’s World Cup having been wrapped up in a 5-0 away victory in Latvia last month in which Eze got the final goal of that win, he refused to get carried away on speculation of their title chances as he explained that confidence and belief will be key.
“We have to be confident, we have to believe it’s possible. It’s working day by day to achieve that goal.”
