Bromley Head Coach, Andy Woodman praised the “character” of his team to beat MK Dons 2-1 in their League Two clash.
Late goals from Deji Elerewe and Omar Sowunmi saw Bromley complete a comeback home win against MK Dons, after Rushian Hepburn-Murphy had put the Dons into a fifth-minute lead.
Woodman however had to watch from the stands as he began a three-match touchline ban following his red card in the 3-3 draw at home to Tranmere earlier this month, but the 54 year-old was impressed with how his team responded to their 2-1 loss at Cambridge.
“I thought it was an absolute masterclass by us today. I thought other than the first goal, which we didn’t let in and let the ball bounce, I thought we were brilliant. I thought everything we’d done, everything we had worked on this week, come off and come to fruition.
“Um and uh look to come from a goal behind shows a lot of character of my team and my players because you know it hasn’t been easy always in certain games and we haven’t probably got our rewards we wanted but against a top team with a budget to dream of, that is an amazing result for Bromley Football Club.”
MK Dons had the best away record coming into the game and Woodman considered them to be “out and out favourites” in his pre-match preview, but he was delighted with how his team went toe to toe and got the result to go 11th in League Two as five points split the top 13 teams in the division.
“Yeah, best away record, best budget, best players no doubt about that. Probably you would argue the most experienced manager in the league, you know, where he’s managed. Um, but you know that’s great, but I felt that everything that we had worked on, the discipline we had showed, um and actually I would say that we had the better chances.
I felt we was all more of a threat all along. Um and at half time, it was really a case of me just making sure these boys believed that they can get the result because they looked like they were kind of, hoping the result would come but not believing it. And that was a real message at half time. ‘Let’s go out in the second half and believe that we can get this result because I believe you can.’
“Um and credit to them, they really did a stellar job and made sure that we executed our set pieces.”
Woodman also acknowledged the fact that he fielded young players like Marcus Ifill and Brooklyn Ilunga in the team, yet the team managed to beat one of the league’s in-form teams.
“So what we are doing here is remarkable in one breath but on top of that, I think you know getting a result against a team like that that’s like the best away record and they’ve really hit a bit of form of late been beating teams threes and fours. I think it’s testament to our guys in tricky, really tricky conditions.”
Woodman proceeded to urge fans to tell their friends to get down to Copperjax Stadium for future home games as he credited his players for their attitude on the pitch.
“As you can probably tell I am delighted, really delighted that we for once we’ve got our rewards. And if I was a Bromley fan, I would be telling all my mates, get yourself down Bromley because they do not give up every time. They pull out results and they’re a good good outfit. And I’m really proud of my football club and my team.”
Bromley now turn their attention to the FA Cup on Saturday 1 November as they host Bristol Rovers in the first round, with Woodman keen to take the competition seriously again once the euphoria of their league win settles.
“Yeah I think the FA Cup is a big fixture to most clubs at the lower levels. Um and particularly us because we’re kind of fresh into it as a league club. Um and yeah we want to progress in that but I think for now, we’re just going to enjoy this result for Bromley Football Club and get our edge around Monday. Back to work.”
