2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Luxembourg vs Northern Ireland

Luxembourg kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign against Northern Ireland in UEFA Group A.

Victory could put Luxembourg or Northern Ireland top if better Slovakia’s result against Germany.

Team News

Luxembourg have a full squad available for selection, although they will be without top goalscorer – Gerson Rodrigues who is suspended indefinitely due to personal circumstances.

Northern Ireland will be without Pierce Charles, Dan Ballard and Brodie Spencer due to various injuries.

When is Kick-Off?

Luxembourg host Northern Ireland at Stade de Luxembourg on Thursday 4 September at 8:45pm CEST (7:45pm UK Time), live on BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC Three in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Luxembourg are yet to lose a World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland (W1, D1).
  • Northern Ireland lost their sole previous away World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg by 3-2 result in September 2013.
  • Neither team are yet to keep a clean sheet in their World Cup Qualifiers.
  • Luxembourg have kept two clean sheets in four matches across all competitions in 2025 (W1, D1, L2).
  • Three of Northern Ireland’s four goals across all competitions in 2025 were scored by Isaac Price.

Prediction

With little chance of either Luxembourg or Northern Ireland qualifying automatically, this is already a crucial clash because neither team can avoid to drop points if want a play-off spot at best ahead of Slovakia.

Luxembourg though have to find a way to produce their best without Rodrigues which will be a tough ask given that they have won just twice since the turn of 2024, so a huge performance is needed if they’re to get a home win.

Northern Ireland meanwhile have scored in all four of their games this calendar year which will give them some confidence despite having lost their two away trips, although this will be more of their level than their visits to Sweden and Denmark where they were outclassed.

I however do feel that Luxembourg won’t make this easy defensively but Northern Ireland really should be too strong here.

Prediction: Luxembourg 0-2 Northern Ireland

Result: Luxembourg 1-3 Northern Ireland
