Alexander Isak is “forever grateful” for his time at Newcastle United following his British record £125m move to Liverpool.
After an extensive stand-off between Isak and Newcastle over rejected bids from Liverpool for the Swede since mid-July which saw Isak make a “promises are broken” allegation, Eddie Howe’s Magpies eventually accepted a £125m deadline-day bid which granted Isak his wish to move to Merseyside.
Tension took a further knock after Isak made a veiled dig towards Newcastle in his first interview as a Liverpool player as he spoke of his “long journey” to securing his move to Arne Slot’s Reds.
“It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.
“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work.”
Isak proceeded to direct a further veiled insult to the Magpies as he spoke of Liverpool’s “history” and current project under Arne Slot.
“It’s a mixture of what the club is building, but what they’re building on top of what the club already is. The history of the club,” added Isak as he explained why he wanted the move.
“Me getting the chance to be a part of this, I want to create history. I want to win trophies.”
Newcastle in response issued a ice-cold statement confirming Isak’s move with no laudation such was their fury at the saga after Isak helped them to last season’s Carabao Cup title and Champions League qualification, and swiftly unveiled Yoane Wissa as their deadline-day signing from Brentford.
Isak however this afternoon (2 September) adopted a more respectful tone as he took to Instagram to finally acknowledge his time at Newcastle.
“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.
“Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years.
“Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”
