Fatawu’s Winner Sees Leicester to First Win at Charlton in 29 Years

Abdul Fatawu’s 48th-minute winner saw Leicester clinch a first away victory at Charlton since 1996.

Fatawu met Boubakary Soumare’s 48th-minute pass and curled the winning goal into the far-top left corner, which ended the Foxes’ 29-year away hoodoo at The Valley.

Leicester now sit fourth in the table whilst Charlton slipped to 12th position ahead of the mid-afternoon kick-offs.

Having kept clean sheets in their first two league games of the season, Charlton proved difficult to break down with resilient defending as Leicester found themselves frustrated in the opening 25 minutes, during which Jordan Ayew fired wide in the 18th minute.

Abdul Fatawu almost broke the deadlock in the 25th minute with a powerful shot which Thomas Kaminski punched away, before Louis Page fired over the bar from Fatawu’s cutback cross following the subsequent corner-kick.

Charlton eventually carved out their first chance 11 minutes later as Conor Coventry unleashed a 25-yard shot which forced Jakub Stolarczyk to tip over the bar, as neither team found a breakthrough opener before half time.

Nathan Jones’ Addicks nearly broke the deadlock barely two minutes into the second half but Kayne Ramsay’s header from a corner-kick was saved by Stolarczyk.

Leicester barely a minute later punished Ramsay’s wasted chance with a quick attack which fell for Soumare to tee up Fatawu, which the 21-year-old calmly curled into the far-top left corner to break the deadlock for the Foxes who hadn’t won at The Valley since April 1996.

Jannik Vestergaard almost wrapped up victory with a 69th-minute header from a deep free-kick on the left but Kaminski made a crucial save.

Stolarczyk however denied Miles Leaburn’s header as Charlton pushed for a late equaliser before Lloyd Jones saw a header disallowed in the 82nd minute, after Josh Edwards fouled Caleb Okoli during the set-piece.

Leicester eventually stood firm to pick up their second league win in three matches and moved up to fourth.
