Sunderland have signed goalkeeper, Robin Roefs from NEC Nijmegen in a £11.5m transfer.

Roefs’ move makes him Sunderland’s ninth signing of the summer transfer window and replaces Nathan Bishop after the goalie moved to AFC Wimbledon in early July.

Sunderland have paid a £9m initial fee plus will pay a further £2.5m in add-ons which totals £11m, with hope that Roefs can challenge Anthony Patterson for the number one role in goal this season, after the 25-year-old faced minimal opposition for his starting spot in the last three seasons.

Roefs has signed a five-year contract on Wearside and is excited to play Premier League football this season.

“Joining such a big Club with a rich history is a proud moment for me, and I’m excited for the challenge ahead in the Premier League.

“Last season was my first real experience as a senior goalkeeper, and I was happy with how it went, especially with the stats at the end of the campaign. To be part of this journey at a Club like Sunderland is really special, and I’m looking forward to the campaign ahead.”

Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman added: “Robin is a talented young goalkeeper, who has been in high demand this summer after an impressive season in the Eredivisie.

“Right from our opening conversations, his desire to join Sunderland was clear and we are delighted that he’s now a member of our team.

“This was an area of our squad where we wanted increased competition and he has all the attributes to play at the highest level, so we’re looking forward to working with him to ensure he achieves that outcome at the Stadium of Light.”

Roefs began his career at VV Heeswijk before he moved to NEC where he graduated through their academy and made his debut in a 3-0 Eredivisie victory over Utrecht in September 2023.

He has since gone on to make 42 total appearances for NEC during which he kept 11 clean sheets across all competitions.
