Italy’s AS Roma have signed Irish forward, Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton with a £32m buy option.
Having endured a disappointing loan at West Ham in the second half of last season with no goals in eight appearances and out of favour at Brighton, Ferguson has joined Roma on a season-long loan for a £2.6m loan fee plus a non-mandatory option to buy him for £32m next summer.
Brighton Head Coach, Fabian Hurzeler explained that Ferguson’s loan is a chance for the forward to get regular game time following a spade of injuries in the last 18 months.
“Evan had a challenging period across the past season and a half, and it has been one disrupted by niggling injury issues which hasn’t allowed him a run of games.
“He is over those injuries and has come back in great shape. Now he really wants to play regularly. This is an exciting opportunity in a strong league and with the prospect of European football.
“We wish Evan well for the season ahead and will be watching his progress closely throughout the season.”
Ferguson began his career with Ireland’s St Kevin’s Boys before he joined Bohemians where he made four senior appearances, before Brighton signed him in January 2021 initially for their academy.
The now 20-year-old went on to make his senior debut in August 2021 as Brighton beat Cardiff 2-0 in the second round of 2021-22 Carabao Cup, and went on to net 17 goals in 80 appearances across four seasons as the Seagulls qualified for 2022-23 Europa League and reached the Round of 16 stage.
Ferguson represents Republic of Ireland at international level and has scored five goals in 22 caps since his debut as a substitute in a 2-1 home loss to Norway in November 2022.
