Leicester City have appointed Marti Cifuentes as their new manager on a three-year contract until June 2028.

Cifuentes’ move comes just weeks after he resigned from his managerial position at QPR following a period of gardening leave amidst allegations that his agents had been in negotiations with West Brom about their managerial vacancy at end of April.

Leicester have since swooped to appoint him as Ruud van Nistelrooy’s successor after the Dutchman was relieved of his duties following a post-season review, with the Foxes having suffered relegation from the Premier League after one season back in the top flight.

His official arrival was delayed due to the Foxes and QPR needing to sort out compensation but upon confirmation of his arrival, Cifuentes described the role as “a great honour” as he looks to build on Van Nistelrooy’s work and achieve instant promotion back to the Premier League,

“This is a fantastic Club with a proud history and it’s a privilege to me to be asked to help write the next chapter. I’m looking forward to getting to know the players, as well as connecting with our supporters and the city in the weeks and months ahead. I can see the passion that exists here, and I’m excited to begin this journey together.”

Chairman, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha added that the club are “delighted” to welcome Cifuentes as manager and praised the 43-year-old Spaniard for his ambition and ideas during the recruitment process.

“His energy, ambition and clarity of ideas stood out throughout the recruitment process. We felt strongly that bringing him to the Club would help us to create the success we all want in the years ahead.

“Martí is an excellent fit for our Football Club – his personal and coaching qualities will be vital to building an identity our fans will be able to see reflected in their team on the pitch.”

Cifuentes began his managerial career at Rubi in Spain before he went on to manage Saint Andreu, Hospitalet, Sandefjord, AaB and Hammarby IF prior to his move to QPR.
