Newcastle United have signed winger, Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest in a £55m deal.
Following lengthy negotiations in recent weeks, Newcastle agreed an initial £52m fee plus £3m in add-ons for Elanga which could take the total fee to £55m if the add-ons clauses are activated, with the Swede’s move coming after he produced six goals and 11 assists for Forest last season.
The 23 year-old has signed a five-year contract at St James’ Park until June 2030, adding another attacking option and a challenger to Jacob Murphy on the right wing as Newcastle prepare to return to the Champions League after they finished fifth in last season’s Premier League.
Elanga is “excited” to complete his move and is keen to impress the Magpies’ supporters but paid tribute to Forest for their work to develop him enough for this move.
“I’m really happy but most importantly I’m ready. I’m ready to put on this black and white top to really fight for this team and give everything for the passionate fanbase that lives and breathes football.
“I had an amazing two years at Nottingham Forest, they really helped me to become the player I am today, but I’m really happy to be here now. The club won a trophy last season and are building something unique, something special that I really want to be part of.
“I really want to buy into the culture, into the DNA of this club. I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.”
Howe added: “I’m delighted to welcome Anthony to Newcastle United. He has been a key target for us so I’m delighted to secure him at this early part of pre-season.
“He is an exciting talent with attributes that make him a unique attacking threat. His pace, energy and ability to create and score goals will strengthen us and complement the way we want to play.
“Anthony is hungry to develop even further with us and to achieve success here, and we’re all looking forward to working with him.”
Elanga began his career at IF Elfsborg and went on to spend time at Malmo and Hattersley before he joined Manchester United in 2015, where he went on to score four goals in 55 appearances following his senior debut in May 2021 as the Red Devils lost 2-1 to Leicester at Old Trafford.
July 2023 saw Elanga join Forest where he scored 11 goals and created 20 assists in 82 appearances for the Tricky Trees, who went from relegation battlers in his first season to a seventh-placed finish at the end of last season.
