Marcus Bettinelli has left Chelsea to join Manchester City for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Bettinelli joined Chelsea in summer 2021 and made just a single appearance across four seasons at the club, which came in a 5-1 home win over Chesterfield in the third round of 2021-22 FA Cup.

The English goalkeeper though has now left to join Man City as their third-choice goalkeeper following Scott Carson’s exit, with Carson having spent six years in that position in which he managed just two appearances in all competitions as City won a total of 12 trophies during his tenure.

Upon confirmation of his move and replacing Carson, Bettinelli described his opportunity as “an honour” after having watched City’s success from afar over the past decade.

“I have admired from afar what this Club have achieved since Pep Guardiola arrived and now I am excited to be a part of building on that success.

“I can’t wait to work with Guardiola, Xabi Mancisidor and the excellent goalkeepers already here and see their methods up close.

“Hopefully I can contribute in training, the dressing room and on the pitch as we look to win more silverware over the next year.”

City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana added that Bettinelli will bring extra experience to the goalkeeping selection.

“He’s been in the Premier League for a long time and will bolster what is already a strong goalkeeping unit.

“His experience and mentality will hopefully complement our other senior goalkeepers while ensuring he’s always ready to perform when called upon himself.”

Bettinelli began his career at Fulham where he graduated into their first-team squad with 120 appearances between August 2014 – November 2019, when injury curtailed his 2019-20 season early before he spent the final year of his contract on loan at Middlesbrough in 20-21 season.

During his time at Fulham, Bettinelli helped the Cottagers twice win promotion to the Premier League after he had spent 2012-13 & 13-14 seasons on loan at Dartford then Accrington Stanley respectively.
