2024-25 UEFA Europa League Final Preview

Tottenham Hotspur meet Manchester United in an all-English showdown in 2024-25 UEFA Europa League Final.

Victory would see Tottenham or Man Utd qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, despite having endured disastrous league campaigns.

Team News

Pape Matar Sarr is available for Tottenham despite having picked up a minor back issue in their 2-0 Premier League defeat at Aston Villa last weekend.

Lucas Bergvall (ankle), Radu Dragusin (ACL), Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison (both knee), Dane Scarlett (groin) and Timo Werner (hamstring) remain absent.

Man Utd have no fresh injury concerns to report following their 1-0 Premier League loss at Chelsea last weekend.

Jonny Evans (muscle), Leny Yoro (foot), Diogo Dalot (calf) and Joshua Zirkzee (hamstring) are included in the travelling squad, having resumed first-team training in recent days.

Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt (both knee) are still sidelined.

When is Kick-Off?

Tottenham host Man Utd at San Mames Stadium on Wednesday 21 May at 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on TNT Sports 1 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Tottenham have won one of their two previous meetings against Man Utd in all UEFA competitions (W1, L1), which came in a 4-3 aggregate loss in Second Round of 1963-64 Cup Winners’ Cup – having won 2-0 at home then lost 4-1 away.
  • Man Utd are yet to beat Tottenham in a cup tie when played as the away team in all cup competitions (D4, L8).
  • Dominic Solanke has scored in each of Spurs’ last three matches in this competition (W3), of which two of his three goals came from the penalty spot.
  • Man Utd have kept just one clean sheet in the knockout stage of this season’s Europa League (W4, D2), which came in a 3-0 first-leg semi-final win over Athletic Bilbao in this stadium.

Prediction

Having endured a dismal league campaign and put their eggs largely in this basket in terms of competitions, Tottenham really need to step up now and justify that move if want to salvage any decent pride with a trophy and a more clinical display akin to what we saw against Bodø/Glimt in the semi-finals.

Another monkey on their back coming into this showpiece is the fact that manager, Ange Postecoglou claimed that he wins trophies in his second season, which is factually true so Spurs will have that psychological pressure to motivate themselves to keep his record intact and silence doubters.

Man Utd meanwhile have been in a similar position in terms of prioritising this competition and did well to only lose narrowly at Chelsea despite fielding a strong first-team, but they now need to raise their game like they did in the semi-final against Athletic Bilbao if they want the trophy.

In fact this is Champions League or bust for both teams in terms of their chance of qualifying for Europe next season which only further heightens the pressure, whilst Spurs beat Man Utd 4-3 in their Carabao Cup Quarter-Final back in December which will give the North London club a mental edge.

Utd also have a poor record against Tottenham in cup competitions when drawn as the away team but with everything that is at stake, I expect a tense but fierce game as both teams won’t want to lose although Tottenham might just have the edge if they can play like they did in the last cup clash between these teams.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Man Utd

Result: Tottenham 1-0 Man Utd
