From each of the four all-Premier League ties going to extra time at minimum to four bookings across the round to two local derbies and a huge scare at the Etihad Stadium, the fifth round certainly proved dramatic with plenty of thrills and spills as three ties needed penalties to determine a winner.

Nico O’Reilly’s brace plus Kevin De Bruyne’s 90th minute strike saw last season’s runner-up, Manchester City come from behind to beat Plymouth 3-1 at home, having fell behind to Maksym Talovierov’s header from Matthew Sorinola’s cross.
Marco Asensio’s second-half brace saw Aston Villa wrap up a clinical home win over Cardiff, as the Spaniard converted assists from Marcus Rashford and Ollie Watkins.
Eddie Nketiah’s header saw Crystal Palace triumph 3-1 over South-London rivals, Millwall in a fiery derby in which Japhet Tanganga’s own-goal and Daniel Munoz’s scruffy effort put them ahead, before Wes Harding pulled a goal back for the Lions who were reduced to ten men after Liam Roberts’ early red card for a foul on Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Reigning champions, Manchester United saw their title defence ended with a 4-3 loss on penalties to Fulham in which Victor Lindelöf and Joshua Zirkzee both missed, after Bruno Fernandes’ low strike had cancelled out Calvin Bassey’s first-half header.
Danny Welbeck chipped in a 114th minute winner as Brighton came from behind to upset Newcastle 2-1 with ex Magpie, Yankuba Minteh having cancelled out Alexander Isak’s penalty, although both teams finished a man down after red cards for Anthony Gordon and Tariq Lamptey.
Bournemouth saw off Wolves 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout which saw three misses after the pair played out a 1-1 draw in which Evanilson’s opener was cancelled out by Matheus Cunha, although Cunha was sent off in extra time following a clash with Milos Kerkez.
Matz Sels’ save of Jack Taylor’s penalty sent Nottingham Forest into the Quarter-Finals with a 5-4 win on penalties over Ipswich, having played out a 1-1 draw in which George Hirst headed the Tractor Boys in front before Ryan Yates nodded in Forest’s equaliser.

Preston ended their 59-year wait for a Quarter-Final appearance with a ruthless 3-0 demolition over Lancashire rivals, Burnley at Deepdale, as Robbie Brady’s free-kick put the Lilywhites ahead against his former team before Milutin Osmajic and Will Keane wrapped up a dramatic victory.
