Slovakian goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka has signed a new contract at Newcastle United.
Dubravka first arrived at Newcastle in January 2018 from Sparta Prague on an initial loan deal which became permanent five months later, with the 36 year-old having gone on to make 178 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions.
January however saw Dubravka strongly linked with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Shabab and the goalkeeper was emotional following Newcastle’s first-leg victory at Arsenal in their Carabao Cup semi-final, but a move ultimately failed to materialise and the Magpies went on to beat the Gunners 4-0 on aggregate to reach this season’s final.
Newcastle eventually persuaded Dubravka to sign a new contract with the Slovakian international delighted to extend his stay on Tyneside.
“I’m really happy to have extended my time here. I had a really positive discussion with the gaffer and sporting director and we all agreed that it would be best if I stayed here.
“I have a really special connection here with the club, the staff and the fans. My children were born here, so they are Geordies now, and this club holds a special place in my heart.
“I feel that the team is in a really good place at the minute, with how we are doing in the league and obviously being in two cup competitions is really exciting.”
Newcastle Head Coach, Eddie Howe added that Dubravka is a top player who has been one of Newcastle’s best players in the last seven years, during which he spent the first half of 2022-23 season on loan at Manchester United where he made just two appearances.
“Martin is a high-quality goalkeeper who has performed brilliantly for Newcastle United over the years.
“He has stepped back into the team recently and performed very well, demonstrating his value within a strong goalkeeping unit.”
Howe also acknowledged Dubravka’s commitment and focus amidst speculation over his future.
“It’s no secret that he had options to move on in January, but he deserves huge credit for keeping his focus. We are delighted Martin is staying with us.”
