2024-25 Sky Bet Championship: Week 33 – Monday

Leeds United host Sunderland in a blockbuster Championship showdown in the race for promotion.

Victory will see Leeds return to the summit of the Championship, whilst Sunderland will stay fourth but a win will move the Black Cats to within five points of league leaders – Sheffield United.

Team News

Leeds have no fresh injury concerns to report after their win at Watford as Max Wober and Patrick Bamford remain ruled out with respective knee and hamstring injuries.

Sunderland could welcome Romaine Mundle back into contention following his recovery from a hamstring injury which he suffered in September 2024.

Ahmed Abdullahi (groin), Tommy Watson (knee/ankle), Aji Alese and Niall Huggins (both knee) remain sidelined.

When is Kick-Off?

Leeds host Sunderland at Elland Road on Monday 17 February at 8pm GMT, live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Leeds have won and lost one of their last five meetings against Sunderland (W1, D3, L1).
  • Sunderland are unbeaten in their last five visits to Leeds (W3, D2).
  • Leeds have scored just one goal and conceded six goals in their last five home games against Sunderland.
  • Leeds have scored 18 goals in their last six league games without conceding (W5, D1).
  • Sunderland have kept two clean sheets in three away games in 2025 (W2, D1).

Prediction

With only the Championship promotion race now a priority for Leeds after they bounced back from their FA Cup exit to Millwall with a ruthless win at Watford, it is hard to see their momentum grinding to a halt especially with six straight clean sheets in the league.

Sunderland though do have the form momentum in this specific fixture and certainly know how to show grit like they did to beat Luton in a clinical midweek performance, but that experience could help them here given that they might need to deploy a similar resilient low block but be clinical on the counter-attack to stop Leeds.

With just seven points also separating both teams coming into this game, Sunderland know that a win is imperative for their automatic promotion hopes but when Leeds aren’t winning, they know how to grind out draws as we saw at Burnley last month and I can see the same here but with goals.

Prediction: Leeds 1-1 Sunderland

Result: Leeds 2-1 Sunderland
