2024-25 Premier League: Week 22 – Ipswich vs Man City

Ipswich host Manchester City in a huge Premier League fixture with implications at both ends of the table.

If Everton fail to win in one of the mid-afternoon kick-offs, victory would lift Ipswich up to 16th in the table, whilst Man City can climb to fifth with a win.

Team News

Kalvin Phillips is ineligible to feature for Ipswich against his parent club, due to being on loan from Man City.

Sammie Szmodics (ankle), Axel Tuanzebe (hamstring), Conor Chaplin (knee) and Chiedozie Ogbene (Achilles) remain ruled out.

Man City have no fresh injury concerns following their 2-2 draw at Brentford but John Stones is nearing a return from a foot injury, although he is unlikely to feature in this game.

Ruben Dias (muscle), Oscar Bobb (leg) and Rodri (knee) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Ipswich face Man City at Portman Road in a 4:30pm GMT kick-off on Sunday 19 January, live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Ipswich have lost five of their nine previous Premier League meetings against Man City (W3, D1, L5).
  • Man City have won one of four previous Premier League trips to Ipswich (W1, D1, L2).
  • Both teams have scored in all four previous Premier League meetings at Portman Road, with Ipswich having netted eight goals to City’s six.
  • Coming into this matchweek, no Premier League player has made more errors which led to a goal than Ipswich’s Arijanet Muric (5).
  • Josko Gvardiol has made more interceptions in the top-flight than any other City player this season (21).

Prediction

Despite a strong defensive effort against Brighton, Ipswich simply were outclassed whilst their attack just lacked the clinical touch which is needed if they’re to stand any chance of springing a surprise result.

Man City meanwhile are back to their best but were certainly made for their draw at Brentford because they were clinical to go two goals up, yet somehow defensively switched off and struggled to handle Brentford’s growing intensity which cost them a likely important win.

I however can’t see them suffering a similar meltdown here because they really should be too strong for Ipswich even if they might need to be sharper if want to break down the hosts’ defence.

Prediction: Ipswich 0-2 Man City

Result: Ipswich 0-6 Man City
