Luton Town have appointed Matt Bloomfield as their new manager until June 2028.
Bloomfield’s appointment comes after a fast-paced search and compensation agreed with Wycombe following Rob Edwards’ departure last week, with the Hatters currently sat 20th in the Championship standings.
Luton’s decision to swoop for Bloomfield came amidst a strong start to the League One season for Wycombe under the 40 year-old, who has left Adams’ Park with the Chairboys sat second in the third-tier to join the Hatters on a three-and-a-half year contract until June 2028.
Bloomfield will be joined by assistant manager, Richard Thomas, whilst first-team coach, Lee Harrison and senior analyst, Ben Cirne.
Luton CEO, Gary Sweet thanked Wycombe for the co-operation in allowing Bloomfield and his coaching staff to make “a swift and smooth transition” to Kenilworth Road.
Sweet also complimented Bloomfield and Wycombe for sharing the same ethos and determination to climb the EFL ladder, during which Bloomfield spent 19 years at the Chairboys as a player, before he returned as manager in February 2023.
“Over the years in which we as a club have risen up the EFL, we encountered Matt at every step as a respected captain of his team, and together they have always shared our hunger and desire to improve and get to the next level.
“Since returning to Wycombe as manager we have been hugely impressed with his work in leading them back towards the top of League One, and especially in how they have done it in such an entertaining way, forging a reputation for front-footed attacking football.”
Addressing the reasoning behind Bloomfield’s appointment, Sweet explained that the former midfielder’s ability to build a promotion-challenging team was a huge factor.
“We identified Matt’s personal and team-building qualities as the outstanding candidate to fit in with the culture we have long established here at Luton Town, and I’m sure every supporter will join me in welcoming him, along with Richard, Lee and Ben to Kenilworth Road.”
Bloomfield’s first match in charge will take place at Kenilworth Road on Saturday 18 January as the Hatters host Preston North End in a 3pm GMT kick-off.
