Defender, Aaron Hickey has signed a new three-and-a-half year contract at Brentford until June 2028.

Hickey joined Thomas Frank’s Bees from Bologna in July 2022 but various injuries has limited him to just 37 appearances, with the 22 year-old having been absent for the last 14 months due to a serious hamstring injury.

Brentford nevertheless remain confident in Hickey’s potential and awarded him a new three-and-a-half year contract until June 2028, with the defender pleased to be entrusted with more time to show his talent at the Bees.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be here and playing Premier League football. It’s a great club, the atmosphere at the stadium is incredible, and I just really enjoy being here.

“I’m focused now on coming back and playing with the team.”

Hickey also spoke of his pride at the club’s loyalty to him despite his injury issues and is keen to repay their support.

“The club has been very loyal to me, despite this injury. I’m very thankful for that. I now want to get back on the pitch and give something back.

“I’ll be back – and I’ll be back faster, strong and fitter, ready to do whatever I can for the club.”

Hickey is currently “back on the pitch running,” and focused on “building up fitness” ahead of a return to first-team training, although he revealed that he found the lengthy injury difficult to deal with.

“It’s been a very long time – it’s been difficult and disappointing for me. But these things happen and, now, I just have to make sure I’m mentally strong and ready to come back into the team again.

“It’s been hard. I had my first surgery, which didn’t go well, so that was a major disappointment for me. I had another surgery, worked my way back, I was back running, and then I felt something again.

“I feel like I’ve been very unlucky, to be honest. But now I’m feeling good and I’m fully focused on being back and training with the team.

“I go and support the boys nearly every week and it’s great that they’re doing well – we’ve got a great blend of players here and it’s all starting to come together.”

“I’m happy that we’ve signed a new contract with Aaron,” added Frank who is confident that Hickey can rediscover and fulfil his potential.

“He has struggled with injuries over the last year, but there is light at the end of the tunnel now.

“We know that, before he was injured, he was a very good full-back with a high ceiling and with high potential.

“Now, it’s about getting Aaron back on the grass and getting him games so he can show his high level again.”
