Canadian Grand Prix will move to May from the 2026 season onwards as part of a calendar revamp.
The Canadian GP at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal, has predominantly been held in early to mid June since 1982, having previously been held between late August – October since its F1 bow in 1967.
F1 however is now focused on creating a more sustainable calendar which will see Monaco GP move from its traditional last weekend in May slot to early June.
In-turn, the change means that the Canadian GP will be moved to late May, following consultation with the race promoter – Octane Racing Group (ORG) alongside key officials from the Canadian Government, Montreal and tourism companies.
One consequence of the change is a possibility of the Canadian GP clashing with IndyCar’s showpiece Indy 500 race, should F1 slot their jaunt to Montreal in for the last weekend of May.
“I am incredibly grateful to the promoter and all of the government stakeholder partners involved in the Canadian Grand Prix, from the local, to the provincial and national government,” commented F1 President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali.
“We applaud the tremendous effort from all involved to accelerate the temporary build of the event, to be ready to host the Formula 1 community earlier than in the past.
“The change will make the future flow of our calendar not only more sustainable, but logistically more sensible for our teams and personnel.”
ORG CEO, Jean-Philippe Paradis added: “This change in the schedule is a major step in our commitment, as well as Formula 1’s, toward a more sustainable future.
“It demonstrates our desire to combine sporting performance and event organization with environmental responsibility.”
Paradis proceeded to explain that this move will have a positive effect for locals by effectively “… extending the summer season for Montreal.”
This change comes as F1 continues to make its calendar environmentally friendly, in which Japanese GP has moved to spring and the Azerbaijan GP to September, whilst Qatar is now the penultimate race prior to the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
