Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has vowed to “do better” heading into the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend.

A 20-second time penalty for two reckless lunges on his title rival, Lando Norris on lap 10 of the Mexico City GP saw Verstappen finish sixth, whilst Norris managed second to cut his championship deficit down to 47 points.

Verstappen now is headed to Sao Paulo, Brazil, amidst rumours of a five-place grid penalty if Red Bull opt to change his power unit, but is eager to produce a response at a circuit where he has won the Grand Prix twice before.

Mexico was a race to forget but we know that we can do better and are working hard to figure out what went wrong so we can improve our form for the final few races.

We need to do everything we can to be more competitive and come back stronger to a place and to where we know we can be.”

This weekend marks the penultimate sprint event of the season meaning that a maximum of 34 points is achievable across the sprint and GP.

That opens up the prospect of the title gap being reduced to as little as 13 points, should Verstappen fail to score and Norris does a clean sweep of victories in the sprint and main race.

Verstappen nevertheless views the weekend as a chance to add extra points on a circuit which he loves, given the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace’s technical nature and potential for rain this weekend.

“Brazil is the final race for us of a long triple header and obviously another Sprint weekend so will be very busy, but an opportunity to score points.

“Interlagos is a cool track to drive with a lot of history and is also quite technical, with all the elevation changes. I am looking forward to going back to Brazil and racing in front of the passionate fans.”
