Niall Huggins has signed a contract extension at Sunderland until June 2026, with a club option for a further year.

Huggins has scored two goals in 27 appearances in all competitions since he joined the Black Cats in summer 2021 from Leeds United, but has been sidelined with a knee injury for the last 10 months.

The 23 year-old though opted to sign a contract extension until June 2026, with the club retaining an option to extend for a further year until June 2027.

Reflective of the club’s support to him in his recovery from a knee injury, Huggins believes that this contract extension shows their belief in him.

“It’s been a tough year for me, so I appreciate the Club backing me and seeing my potential. I

“I’m delighted to sign this contract and I’m grateful for the continued support I receive from my team-mates, the staff, and the supporters.

“My focus now is to keep working as hard as I can to ensure that I get back to the level I know I’m capable of.”

Sunderland’s Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman praised Huggins for his “first class” response to his injury and recovery, with the decision to extend his contract designed to remove speculation over his future come next summer.

“Niall experienced a significant injury just as he had established himself in the team but despite this disappointment, his response has been first class.

“He continues to work extremely hard to put himself in a positive position as he continues his rehabilitation.

“This extension removes any ambiguity over his status next summer and allows our focus to be on supporting him over the coming weeks and months.”
