2024-25 Carabao Cup: Third Round – Newcastle Utd vs AFC Wimbledon

Newcastle United host AFC Wimbledon at St James’ Park in the third round of 2024-25 Carabao Cup.

Victory would see Newcastle Utd reach the next stage for the fourth time in five seasons, whilst a win would ensure that AFC Wimbledon reach the fourth round for the first time in their history.

Team News

Kieran Trippier is a doubt for Newcastle after he suffered a knock in their 1-1 draw against Manchester City in the Premier League.

Alexander Isak (toe), Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles (both knee), Lewis Miley (metatarsal) and Callum Wilson (back) remain absent.

AFC Wimbledon have no fresh injury concerns to report.

When is Kick-Off?

Newcastle host AFC Wimbledon at St James’ Park on Tuesday 1 October at 7:45pm BST, live on Sky Sports + in the UK.

This fixture has been reversed after AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium suffered flooding last week, which caused the tie to be postponed by a week.

Stat Attack

  • This is Newcastle’s first meeting against AFC Wimbledon in all competitions.
  • AFC Wimbledon are visiting St James’ Park for the first time.
  • Excluding penalties, Newcastle are unbeaten in five of their last six matches (W3, D2, L1).
  • AFC Wimbledon came from behind in each of their two Carabao Cup matches this season, having beaten Bromley 2-1 then defeated Ipswich on penalties (W1, D1).

Prediction

Having initially looked set to come into this tie at AFC Wimbledon’s home ground after a sloppy loss at Fulham, Newcastle will certainly feel more confident after how comfortably they dominated City at times last Saturday.

AFC Wimbledon though have had ten days to prepare for this fixture due to their League Two game also being postponed, which meant that they’ve played just two games in September which will give them a proper freshness.

I however don’t see them beating a likely rotated Newcastle who should really have enough quality to take victory, but they will know that the Dons have threats of their own which Ipswich didn’t heed in the last round.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 AFC Wimbledon

Result: Newcastle 1-0 AFC Wimbledon
