2024-25 League One Roundup – September

Roundup of September’s action in the 2024-25 League One season.

A lively month saw a surprise surge up the table from one team following Steve Bruce’s appointment as manager, whilst Wrexham and Birmingham battled for the top spot and even met in a ‘Hollywood derby’ as coined by the media.

Now here is a roundup of all of September’s action in the third tier.

 

Week Five

The international break meant a depleted round of fixtures as just three fixtures took place, which saw Wrexham go top with a 3-0 win over Shrewsbury through goals from Ollie Palmer, Elliott Lee and Jack Marriott.

Adam Phillips’ header saw Barnsley beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 to go third, after Davis Keillor-Dunn’s opening goal was cancelled out by Ruel Sotiriou.

Chuks Aneke’s 25-yard curler saw Charlton snatch a 1-1 draw at home to Rotherham, after Liam Kelly fired the Millers ahead.

 

Week Six

Wrexham stayed top despite losing 3-1 at Birmingham City after Marriott put them ahead in the third minute, only for Jay Stansfield’s brace and Tomoki Iwata’s effort to complete the Blues’ comeback in a ‘Hollywood derby’ to go second.

Charlton sat third after Gassan Ahadme’s headed winner saw them win 1-0 at second-bottom Shrewsbury.

Josh Koroma’s brace plus goals from Ben Wiles and Antony Evans saw fourth-placed Huddersfield thrash Bolton 4-0 away from home.

Stockport County sat fifth after Louie Barry’s strike was cancelled out by Armando Quitirna’s penalty in a 1-1 draw at Crawley.

Lincoln City rounded out the top six following a 1-1 draw at Peterborough, having initially led through Ben House before Kwame Poku rescued a point for the Posh.

Down in the relegation zone, Cambridge found themselves rock-bottom following a 2-1 loss at Mansfield, as Lee Gregory struck twice for the Stags either side of Emmanuel Longelo’s equaliser.

Leyton Orient moved up to third bottom after Charlie Kelman struck a 27th minute winner at Reading, which gave Orient their first league win of the season.

Burton Albion sat above the bottom four on goal difference following a 2-2 draw at Rotherham, in which Jonson Clarke-Harris and Cameron Humphreys put the hosts ahead in-between goals from Danilo Orsi and Jake Cooper-Love.

Blackpool moved out of the relegation zone in their first game under Bruce, after James Husband struck an injury-time winner in a 2-1 win over Exeter, after CJ Hamilton’s effort was cancelled out by Ed Francis.

Elsewhere, Dan Udoh and Richard Kone fired Wycombe to a comeback 2-1 win at Northampton after Sam Hoskins’ penalty put the Cobblers ahead.

Joe Hugill’s brace plus goals from Thelo Aasgaard and Luke Chambers saw Wigan win 4-0 away at Bristol Rovers, as the hosts finished a man down following Taylor Moore’s red card for an off-the-ball incident with Maleace Asamoah.

Elliott List’s brace and Carl Piergianni’s header saw Stevenage win 3-0 at home to Barnsley.

 

Week Seven

Weekend

Wrexham stayed top with a 2-1 win over Crawley through goals from Lee and Max Cleworth, despite Quitirna’s equaliser in the 54th minute for the visitors.

First-half goals from Iwata and Stansfield saw Birmingham win 2-0 at fourth-bottom Rotherham to stay second on goal difference.

Stephen Humphrys curled in a 90th minute winner to send Barnsley up to third with a 2-1 win at third-bottom Burton Albion, in which Luca Connell’s free-kick was cancelled out by Cooper-Love.

Ahadme’s own-goal plus Albie Morgan’s strike saw Blackpool win 2-1 at Charlton, in spite of Luke Berry’s consolatory goal for the Addicks.

Koroma’s 80th minute goal couldn’t prevent Huddersfield losing 3-1 at home to Northampton, thanks to Michail Helik’s own-goal plus goals from Cameron McGeehan and Tariqe Fosu.

Lincoln City rounded out the top six with a goalless draw against Wigan at Sincil Bank.

Down in the relegation zone, Cambridge remained rock-bottom following a 2-1 loss at Wycombe, as Cameron Humphreys smashed in a left-footed winner after Gareth McCleary’s opener was cancelled out by Dan Nlundulu.

Leo Castledine’s second-minute goal couldn’t prevent second-bottom Shrewsbury losing 2-1 at Mansfield, as Gregory and Aaron Lewis scored in a second-half comeback.

Leyton Orient sat just outside of the bottom four following a 4-1 win at Stockport County, in which Ethan Galbraith’s brace plus goals from Dan Agyei and Sean Clare condemned their hosts to a first league loss this season.

Elsewhere, Francis and Kamari Doyle fired Exeter to a 2-0 home win over Stevenage.

Dion Charles’ hat-trick plus goals from Josh Sheehan and Kyle Dempsey saw Bolton hammer Reading 5-2, despite Ben Elliott and Sam Smith scoring for the visitors.

Poku, Ricky-Jade Jones and Malik Mothersille fired Peterborough to an eventual 3-2 home win over Bristol Rovers, despite Luke McCormick and Gatlin O’Donkor’s consolatory goals for the Gas.

 

Midweek

Huddersfield missed a chance to go third after Kyle Joseph’s header and Hamilton’s strike handed Blackpool a 2-0 away win.

Kelman rescued Leyton Orient a 2-2 draw at home to Peterborough after Poku and Mothersille put the Posh in front, following Tom James’ curled opener.

Wigan played out a goalless draw at home to Stevenage in a mid-table clash.

 

Week Eight

Krystian Bielik 86th minute headed winner sent Birmingham top with a 3-2 comeback win over Peterborough, after Willum Willumsson’s effort and Oscar Wallin’s own-goal cancelled out Jones and Emmanuel Fernandez’s goals.

Wrexham slipped to second with a goalless draw at Leyton Orient.

Freddie Draper and Bailey Cadamarteri came on as substitutes to fire Lincoln City up to third with a 2-0 win at rock-bottom Cambridge.

Blackpool continued their surge up the table into fourth with a 3-0 home win over third-bottom Burton Albion, through goals from Odeluga Offiah, Rob Apter and Lee Evans.

Second-half goals from Will Evans and Lewis saw Mansfield climb to fifth with a 2-0 victory away to Northampton.

Barry’s injury-time strike rescued Stockport a 1-1 draw at sixth-placed Barnsley, with the Tykes having led through Phillips’ fourth-minute penalty.

Down in the relegation zone, Shrewsbury remain second-bottom with a 1-1 draw against Rotherham, after George Lloyd’s opener was cancelled out by Clarke-Harris’ penalty.

Bristol Rovers dipped into the last relegation spot in 21st position following a 2-1 home loss to Wycombe, having initially led through Scott Sinclair before Daniel Harvie’s strike and Joe Low’s header sealed the Chairboys’ comeback.

Crawley sit above the drop area on goal difference following a 2-0 home defeat to Bolton, with Dempsey and John McAtee having netted for the Trotters.

Elsewhere, Huddersfield extended their losing run to three games with a 2-1 loss at Reading, having initially led through Matty Pearson before Harvey Knibbs and Elliott completed the Royals’ fightback.

Jordan Roberts’ clinical 67th minute counter-attack saw Stevenage scrape a 1-0 win over Charlton.

Wigan held Exeter to a goalless draw at the Brick Community Stadium.
