Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is happy to have “maximised” his performance to qualify second for 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.
Verstappen endured a “difficult” Friday Practice as he only found 0.076 seconds between FP1 and FP2, which left him 15th in the latter session after he struggled for grip and was left “sliding a lot more than usual.”
FP3 and Qualifying however saw the 26 year-old rebound to qualify second on the grid and 0.203s off title rival and pole-sitter, Lando Norris.
Speaking to the media after Qualifying, Verstappen was “very happy” with his front-row start, as he credited Red Bull for creating “great solutions” and changes to the car.
“The car was a lot nicer to drive, we could attack the corners a bit more and we really maximised our performance today. I had a better feeling with the car and kept on improving it as yesterday was very tough.”
Verstappen though was cagey on their chances in the race as he instead spoke of confidence for future races.
“On paper, this is not a good track on the calendar for us, and we do have our limitations on the pace, so this gives us a lot of hope in the coming races that we can do well.”
CEO and Team Principal, Christian Horner echoed Verstappen’s belief that they are “going in the right direction.”
Horner added that he is relieved that Verstappen is lined up alongside Norris who is in better form and now 59 points off Verstappen’s title lead.
“The most important thing is that we’re next to our closest rival on the front row when it counts.”
