2024-25 UEFA Champions League: League Phase: Young Boys vs Aston Villa

Young Boys host Aston Villa at Wankdorf Stadium in their first league phase fixture of 2024-25 UEFA Champions League.

With the new league phase commencing this season, victory would boost the knockout qualification chances for either team.

Team News

Young Boys have a full squad available for selection.

Villa have no fresh injury concerns to report following their Premier League win against Everton.

Leon Bailey, Matty Cash (both hamstring), Boubacar Kamara and Tyrone Mings (both knee) remain sidelined.

When is Kick-Off?

Young Boys host Villa at Wankdorf Stadium on Tuesday 17 September at 6:45pm CEST (5:45pm UK Time), live on TNT Sport 1 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • This is Young Boys’ first-ever meeting against Aston Villa.
  • Villa are winless away to Swiss opposition in all UEFA competitions (D1, L1), having drawn 1-1 at Basel and lost 2-0 at Zurich in Intertoto Cup.
  • Young Boys scored first in both of their play-off legs against Galatasaray.
  • Villa are yet to keep a clean sheet this season in all competitions (W3, L1).

Prediction

Young Boys seem to have put their eggs into their European basket already this season because their league form has been poor with, but they somehow can’t be written off with players like Filip Ugrinic and Cedric Itten available.

Villa meanwhile were initially sloppy in their end product and defending against Everton, yet they were absolutely enjoyable in their press and finishing once hit their stride to come from 2-0 down to get the win.

If Villa can play like they did in the second half of that comeback then I do see them getting the win, as long as they don’t underestimate Young Boys.

Prediction: Young Boys 1-2 Aston Villa

Result: Young Boys 0-3 Aston Villa
