2024-25 Sky Bet Championship: Week Three – Saturday

Sunderland host Burnley in a top of Championship clash at Stadium of Light.

Victory would see Sunderland go top of the table, whilst Burnley can stay at the summit with a win.

Team News

Alan Browne is available for Sunderland after recovering from a minor calf injury.

Ian Poveda (fitness) could feature but Dan Ballard, Niall Huggins, Jenson Seelt are all still sidelined with knee injuries.

Burnley have no fresh injury concerns to report after their dominant home win over Cardiff.

New signings, Bashir Humphreys and Joe Worrall could make their debuts for the club.

When is Kick-Off?

Sunderland host Burnley at Stadium of Light on Saturday 24 August at 3pm BST, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Sunderland have lost two of their last seven league meetings against Burnley (W2, D3, L2).
  • Burnley have won one of their last nine league visits to Sunderland (W1, D3, L5).
  • Two of Sunderland’s last three league meetings against Burnley finished in 0-0 results.
  • Luke O’Nien has scored in each of Sunderland’s two league matches this season (W2).
  • Josh Brownhill has scored in each of Burnley’s two league matches this season (W2).

Prediction

Still yet to concede in the league, Sunderland won’t have much fear coming into this game after their ruthless demolition of initial league leaders, Sheffield Wednesday, although Burnley will be a much harder prospect to face here.

Burnley meanwhile have seamlessly adapted to Scott Parker’s style with nine goals in two games, underlining how dangerous they can be when on the attack and there is little reason to see why that won’t be the case again on Wearside.

This is a top-of-table clash though which adds an extra edge to the contest but if Burnley play like they’ve done so far, they will surely win despite their poor record at Sunderland.

Prediction: Sunderland 0-2 Burnley

Result: Sunderland 1-0 Burnley
