2024-25 Championship: Week Two Roundup

Roundup of the second matchweek of 2024-25 Championship season. 

Second-half goals from Josh Brownhill, Zeki Amdouni and Johann Berg Gudmundsson saw Burnley thrash rock-bottom Cardiff 5-0 to go top, with Ethan Horvath’s own-goal having opened the scoring before Luca Koleosho doubled their lead.

Eliezer Mayenda’s brace plus goals from Dennis Cirkin and Luke O’Nien saw Sunderland thrash Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 on Wearside, which put the Black Cats up to second.

Edo Kayembe’s brace plus Ryan Andrews’ strike saw Watford beat Stoke 3-0 to go third in the table.

Yuki Ohashi rescued Blackburn a 2-2 draw away against Norwich after Borja Sainz turned the match around for the Canaries, with Josh Sargent having cancelled out Ryan Hedges’ opening goal.

West Brom sit fifth following a goalless draw against Leeds United at The Hawthorns.

Bristol City round out the top six with a dramatic 4-3 home win over third-bottom Millwall in which Scott Twine netted the 88th minute winner, with the Robins having blown a 2-0 lead and trailed 3-2 until Fally Mayulu sparked their late comeback.

Down in the relegation zone, Preston sat second bottom following a 3-0 loss at Swansea in which Matt Grimes scored a penalty, before Azeem Abdulai and Zan Vipotnik completed the Swans’ win.

Plymouth sit just above the bottom three after Ibrahim Cissoko’s effort was cancelled out by Lewie Coyle in a 1-1 draw at home to Hull.

Ten-men Luton snatched a goalless draw at Portsmouth, despite Thomas Kaminski’s red card for time-wasting and a foul on Paddy Lane.

Elsewhere, Haji Wright’s brace plus Milan van Ewijk’s effort saw Coventry beat Oxford United 3-2, even though the Us had twice levelled through Ciaron Brown and Mark Harris.

Despite Jack Colback’s red card, Jimmy Dunne’s header and Lyndon Dykes’ strike saw QPR come from 2-0 down to salvage a 2-2 draw at Sheffield United, after Gustavo Hamer and Kieffer Moore had put the Blades ahead in the opening minutes.

Finally, Kayden Jackson’s 14th minute smash-and-grab strike saw Derby beat Middlesbrough,
