Manchester United have signed Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich.

De Ligt’s future has been a topic of speculation all summer amidst on-going negotiations between Utd and Bayern.

Utd eventually saw a total £42.8m bid accepted by Bayern, consisting of £38.5m up front, plus £4.3m in add-ons for the 25 year-old who has signed a five-year contract until June 2029 with option for a further year.

De Light spoke of his “excitement” at taking up “a new challenge” with Utd and reuniting with manager, Erik Ten Hag who he knew from his time at Ajax.

“Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me and I cannot wait to work with him again. I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club.”

Utd’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth added: “Matthijs is an outstanding defender and proven winner who will add quality, experience and leadership to our existing group of senior players.”

De Ligt began his career at Abcoude before he joined Ajax where he progressed through their academy, and went on to score 13 goals in 117 senior appearances.

July 2019 saw De Ligt join Juventus where he managed eight goals in 117 appearances across three seasons, during which he won Serie A, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles.

De Ligt spent the last two seasons at Bayern where he produced five goals in 73 appearances, plus helped them win DFL-Supercup and Bundesliga titles in 2022-23 season.

Internationally, De Light represents Netherland in which he has scored twice in 45 appearances, having made his debut in March 2017 at just 17 years-old.
