Brentford have signed forward, Fabio Carvalho from Liverpool in a £27.5m transfer.

Carvalho joined Liverpool from Fulham in July 2022 on a free transfer but failed to break through into the first team on a regular basis, and spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig and Hull City respectively.

Jurgen Klopp however left in May and his replacement, Arnie Slot has greenlit Carvalho’s sale, with Brentford paying an initial £20m transfer fee.

The Bees however will pay up to a further £7.5m in add-ons to take the total fee up to £27.5m, whilst Liverpool have a 17.5% sell-on clause inserted within the deal for any future sale of the Portuguese player.

Brentford manager, Thomas Frank believes that Carvalho can be an asset and help the squad push back up the table after an injury-hit campaign.

“Fábio is a player with a lot of qualities. He can play in all of the front three or four positions in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1. His best position is probably as a no.10 or coming in from the left.

“Offensively, he has great abilities on the ball: he can go past players, slide a pass, create chances and get on the end of chances. He’s a type of player that we don’t have many of in the squad so he will add that something extra for us.

“His ability and mentality to work hard in the pressure is also very, very good. That’s along with him ticking all the boxes from a cultural perspective and being the right character. So we’re very pleased to see him come in and push the team forward.”

Carvalho began his career at Olivais Sul before joining Benfica and Balham’s academies, prior to his move to Fulham in 2015, although he didn’t make his senior debut until September 2020.

He went on to score 12 goals in 44 appearances and helped Fulham win promotion to the Premier League in 2021-22 season, as Championship champions that season before he left for Anfield on a free transfer.

His first season at Liverpool saw him net three goals in 21 appearances and win the Community Shield on debut in July 2022.

Last season saw him endure 15 appearances at RB Leipzig in a miserable first half of the campaign, but he went on to score nine goals and contribute two assists for Hull in the second half of the campaign.
