England Under-21s manager, Lee Carsley has been appointed as interim manager of the senior team.
Carsley’s appointment will see him take charge of England’s Nations League B trip to Republic of Ireland on Saturday 7 September (5pm BST),
He will then lead the Three Lions in a home tie against Finland at Wembley Stadium, London, on Tuesday 10 September at 7:45pm BST, with both fixtures broadcast live on ITV1 in the UK.
Speaking about his interim promotion, Carsley described the job as “an honour” and can’t wait to work with many players who he knows from the youth levels, in order to continue the team’s improved form of recent years.
“As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager.
“My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”
FA CEO, Mark Bullingham added: “Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level.
“He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the UEFA Nations League games ahead. We are grateful to Lee for stepping up to manage the team while we continue with our recruitment process.”
This opportunity will allow the FA to assess Carsley whilst considering alternative managers as a permanent successor to Gareth Southgate, following the 53 year-old’s resignation after England finished runners-up at UEFA Euro 2024 to Spain.
Carsley will know many members of the senior squad from their time within the youth set-up, including Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer and Adam Wharton to name a few of the more graduates from the U21s squad in recent years.
The 50 year-old also has experience of winning titles with England, having led the U21s to 2023 UEFA Under-21s Euro success, with six of the players in that squad having received at least one senior call-up during Carsley’s time in charge.
