Australia have sacked Tony Gustavsson as Head Coach of Women’s Football Team.
Gustavsson’s exit comes less than a year since they finished fourth at 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which they co-hosted with New Zealand.
The Aussies however failed to progress beyond the Group Stages of 2024 Olympics after they finished third in Group B, which saw them fail to advance on goal difference as one of two best third-placed teams.
Football Australia consequently decided that now was the right time to sack Gustavsson after four years in charge, with the Swede describing his tenure as “a great honour and privilege…” packed with highs and lows which he will saviour.
“This journey with the team has had many incredible moments and memories that I will forever treasure.
“Thank you to the incredible players for letting me play a small part in their stories, my staff for being beside me every step of the way, Football Australia for backing our vision for this team, the Australian football family for embracing me and the Australian public for the tremendous support.
“Australian football will be forever in my heart, and I will be watching on and cheering on your success in the future,” concluded Gustavsson
Football Australia CEO, Jamie Johnson hailed Gustavsson as “an integral part of the Matildas’ journey over the past four years,” which saw them finish fourth at 2020 Olympics and last summer’s World Cup.
Johnson added: “We thank him for his strong contribution, passion and commitment during that time and wish him every success for the future.”
Reflecting upon the Olympics performance in which they conceded ten goals – of which five came in an eventual 6-5 win over Zambia, Johnson is “proud” of the team’s efforts with “spirit and resilience” which contributed to the nation’s progress.
“This group of players have over the past four years made a significant impact on Australian football and we are looking forward to the next four-year cycle of the team.”
Looking ahead to the future, Johnson has vowed to “conduct a thorough review of the campaign” to “… identify areas for improvement and ensure we are well-prepared for future challenges.”
Gustavsson’s successor will be announced in due course.
