Arsenal have signed goalkeeper, Daphne van Domselaar from Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee.
Van Domselaar’s move comes after just one season at Villa which saw her keep just two clean sheets in 15 appearances in her first and only season for the Villains.
Her performances and potential however persuaded Arsenal to sign the 24 year-old goalkeeper, who will wear the number 14 shirt this season.
“I’m really happy to be here,” commented van Domselaar who is targeting titles and success in North London. “If you look at Arsenal – the players, the team, the stadium – it’s a huge club and I’m so excited to be part of this club.
“I want to win trophies and achieve big things, and Arsenal is the right place for me to do both. I can’t wait to play at Emirates Stadium in front of all the supporters and show what I can do.”
Arsenal Women’s Head Coach, Jonas Eidevall added that he is “delighted” to sign van Domselaar, who has already earned 27 international caps for Netherlands and was part of the Dutch squad for 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro plus 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“She is a top goalkeeper and already has considerable experience on some of the biggest stages, while we believe she has a great deal of potential for future development, too.
“Daphne will further strengthen our goalkeeper unit alongside Manu and Naomi, and will be a strong addition to the team as we prepare for an important new season.”
Arsenal’s Director of Women’s Football, Clare Wheatley applauded van Domselaar as “one of the best young goalkeepers in the world…” and is confident that the club can help her progress.
“She has a hunger to develop and succeed that closely aligns with our ethos at the club and we’re confident she will be a great addition to our squad.”
Sabrina D’Angelo meanwhile has headed to Villa on a free transfer following expiration of her contract at Arsenal.
Villa’s Head of Women’s Football, Lee Billiard is “excited” to welcome D’Angelo who he believes can improve their goalkeeping standards at the club.
“She is an experienced goalkeeper that will help drive standards and create great competition within the goalkeeping unit.
“With her history of winning at both domestic and international level, we believe Sabrina is a perfect fit for helping us move forward.”
