Aston Villa have signed midfielder, Amadou Onana from Everton for £50m.
Onana’s move has seen his two-season spell at Everton brought to a close, having scored four goals and created three assists in 72 appearances following his move from Lille in August 2022.
Villa meanwhile had sold Douglas Luiz to Juventus in June 2024 and viewed Onana as the ideal replacement, with a £50m offer accepted by Everton for the 22 year-old after both clubs traded Tim Iroegbunam and Lewis Dobbin last month.
Addressing his decision to join Villa, Onana explained that various factors from development to European football was behind his choice to make the move.
“It was a bit of everything. There’s a healthy atmosphere here to grow as a player and as a man.
“The team played very attractive football last season with loads of goals and will now be playing in the Champions League.
“I’ll be playing in the Champions League again and that’s very exciting. We also have a manager that’s one of the best in the business and I think he can take my game to the next level.”
Onana will now be teammates at club level with Youri Tielemans, who like Onana was in the Belgium squad for this summer’s Euros, with Onana crediting the midfielder for his support and feedback about Villa.
“Youri played a big part in me being here because he told me lots of good stuff about the club,” commented Onana who is excited to partner Tielemans.
“He’s someone I’m used to playing with in the national team, so I’m looking forward to training with him on a daily basis.
“He’s someone who’s got the experience to help and guide me throughout the whole process.”
Upon confirmation of Onana’s transfer, Everton issued a brief statement thanking him for his contribution to their top-flight survival over the last two seasons.
“Everton thanks Amadou for his service and wishes him well for the future.”
Onana represents Belgium in international football with 16 of his 17 senior international caps for the Belgian Red Devils having come during his time at Goodison Pak, following his debut in a 4-1 loss at home to Netherlands in 2022-23 UEFA Nations League in June 2022.
