Striker, Matty Godden has departed Coventry City to join Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Godden’s move has brought his five-year stint at Coventry to an end in which he scored 50 goals in 156 appearances, and was part of the team which reached won promotion from League One in 2019-20 season then the semi-finals of last season’s FA Cup.
Coventry manager, Mark Robins paid tribute to Godden for his contribution as he commented: “Matty has made a significant contribution to our rise up the leagues, including being integral to our League One title win and then establishing ourselves in the Championship.
“He will be fondly remembered by Sky Blues supporters for many years to come for what he has achieved here, and we wish him the best of luck for the future.”
Owner and Executive Chairman Doug King added: “Matty has been a fantastic servant to Coventry City and an important part of the Club’s journey. He is an exemplary professional and we wish him the very best for the future.”
Godden has signed a two-year contract at Charlton with a club-option for a further season.
“The gaffer and I both outlined our targets and they lined up; we both want to achieve the same end goal and that’s something that was really important in me coming here,” commented the 32 year-old on his move to the Addicks.
Charlton’s Technical Director, Andy Scott meanwhile explained that Godden’s goalscoring record and ability makes him a ideal fit for manager, Nathan Jones, heading into the new season with his experience.
“He scores goals – his record wherever he has played highlights that and he also contributes with his physicality and hold-up play. He’s a team player who has an incredible attitude to the game and his career.
“Off the ball he works hard for the team and his pressing ability should fit in well with the way that Nathan wants us to play.
“As I said when we signed Luke Berry, throughout this summer we want to add quality, experience and a winning mentality to the young talent we have in our squad. Like Luke, Matt brings exactly that and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact he can have.”
