2020-21 Sky Bet Championship: Week Two – Friday

Coventry City welcome Championship leaders, QPR to St Andrews’ Stadium in the opening match of the second weekend of 2020-21 Sky Bet Championship season.

A win for Coventry will lift them up into the top six ahead of the weekend’s matches, whereas QPR can ensure that they stay top with victory.

Declan Drysdale could start for Coventry after missing last weekend’s league defeat at Bristol City through suspension, having been sent off in their First Round win at MK Dons in Carabao Cup a fortnight ago.

Ben Wilson (wrist), Wes Jobello, Jodi Jones (both knee), Julien Dacosta (ankle), Liam Kelly (hamstring), Will Bapaga (shoulder), Marcel Hilssner (personal),

Michael Rose and Fankaty Dabo are both nearing full fitness after respective hip injuries but are unlikely to be risked here.

QPR have no fresh injury concerns to report after their opening league win over Nottingham Forest as Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ryan Manning face being left out unless they both commit their futures to the club.

Stat Attack

  • Coventry have lost just two of their last eight meetings against QPR (W3, D3, L2).
  • QPR are unbeaten in three of their last five away matches against Coventry (W2, D1, L2).
  • Matty Godden has scored in each of the Robins’ last five league matches, with three of those five goals coming before half-time.

Coventry have been unlucky in their last two matches against Bristol City in league then Gillingham in midweek in League Cup despite playing strong football when going forward, but a mixture of poor finishing and defensive mistakes cost them victories which is necessary for momentum given that they’re only just beginning life back in the second tier.

QPR meanwhile simply were solid against a Forest team who looked toothless in their finishing and took full advantage of that aspect at the other end in an otherwise edgy encounter, although they’re going to have to raise their game here against Coventry.

Silencing Matty Godden though will be the key as well as forcing the Robins’ defence into mistakes and with players like Ilias Chair plus Lyndon Dykes within the team, I can genuinely see QPR having the quality to edge this encounter although both teams should provide entertainment and a few goals at least between them.

Prediction: Coventry City 1-2 QPR

Result: Coventry City 3-2 QPR
